Comharchumann Oileán Árainn Mhóir was founded in 1976. The aims of the Comharchumann are to promote the economic, social and cultural development of the Island. The Co-op is democratically run on a 'one man, one vote basis' and is owned by the members/shareholder.
Developments are undertaken for the benefit of the entire community.
Some of the larger projects undertaken by the Co-op:
- Contractors for the Day Care Medical Centre
- Secured and administered the ferry service from 1983-86
- The building of an 8-house holiday village
- Canvassed and built council houses on the island, 8 family homes and 4 senior citizens homes
- Facilities for fishermen e.g. piers and slipways
- Pitch and Putt golf course
- The building of a Heritage/Cultural Centre
- Providing a store for the supply of building materials
- Machinery pool
- Provision of Helipad
- Organising & Admininistration of Irish Language Classes
